SMA Sales Buck the Trend

SMA continues to buck the wider used car trend by significantly increasing sales volumes over the last year at the very time that the wider used car market continues to fall.

Like for like sales across the Group have risen significantly year on year, with each of the SMA network auction centres in Edinburgh, Leeds, Birmingham, Newcastle and Kinross all reporting good double-digit growth.

Commenting on the growth, SMA Managing Director Bob Anderson reflects on SMA's ambitious approach:

"There can be no question that the dynamics of the used car and remarketing sectors have changed significantly over the last decade.

Falls in consumer disposable income and confidence in challenging economic conditions have altered the car buying dynamic.  New car sales have been under pressure, with consumers' commonly looking to trade down and/or move to more economical vehicles.  At the same time the economic backdrop has created a new money saving 'chic', where customers are very comfortable in negotiating hard and the web has developed as an ideal tool to help them.

Put together we have seen a perfect storm for the remarketing sector; falling nearly new car availability, demand for smaller more economical cars, value focused customers.  Margins and unit sales have both been under pressure.

Our strategy to help vendors and buyers has been to reflect the level of change by developing a business model that matches the dynamism of the market.  Imagination, product development and a real focus upon quality in service and experience have helped SMA to grow in volumes and profit, with the whole process underpinned by innovative technology.

As with a number of industries, nimble thinking and action have created growth momentum in spite of wider falls.  We see this type of shift in balance in the UK supermarket sector.  Whilst SMA is a long established brand, much of the thinking and infrastructure is very new.  We take nothing for granted, we are staying close to our customers' needs, investing in technology and the entire customer experience; we are confident that the future for SMA is bright".

Our grading system is changing

NAMA grading has been developed to provide a long awaited industry standard grading scheme to be used across all auctions within the UK.

We have now introduced NAMA grading across our sites, and over the coming weeks you will notice more vehicles being offered for sale displaying a NAMA grade. These grades are easy to identify as they are 1,2,3,4,5 and U in place of the SMA grades A,B,C,D and E.

Please make sure you have familiarised yourself with the grades. We will still produce condition reports providing additional information for each vehicle as we always have.
